Hyman Science Lecture Series at 麻豆女郎 Hosts Journalist Carl Zimmer
The Nat and Dorothy Hyman Science Lecture Series, as part of the Schmidt College of Science at 麻豆女郎, will host science journalist Carl Zimmer on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 5:30 p.m.
The Nat and Dorothy Hyman Science Lecture Series, as part of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science at 麻豆女郎, will host science journalist Carl Zimmer on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 5:30 p.m., in the Barry and Florence Friedberg Auditorium, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
Zimmer, an award-winning New York Times columnist and author of 15 books, will lead his lecture titled, 鈥淚s Artificial Intelligence Going to Figure Out Life Itself?鈥 Utilizing his expertise in evolution, parasites and heredity throughout this mind-bending odyssey, Zimmer will explore how biologists are using AI to uncover some of life鈥檚 greatest mysteries.
The event, open to the public, is free of charge and guests can register . Immediately following the lecture will be a reception with refreshments, and Zimmer鈥檚 books will be available for purchase.
A regular contributor to publications such as National Geographic, Scientific American and The Atlantic, Zimmer鈥檚 books and articles have garnered numerous awards, including the National Academies Communication Award and the Stephen Jay Gould Prize, given by the Society for the Study of Evolution. He also has received fellowships from the Johns Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zimmer contributed to the coverage that won The New York Times the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. In addition, Zimmer is an adjunct professor at Yale University鈥檚 Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry.
The Nat and Dorothy Hyman Science Lecture Series is made possible by 麻豆女郎 alumnus Jerry Hyman, son of Nat and Dorothy Hyman. The series was created to encourage and inspire students in the sciences and provide access to educational lectures by leaders in the scientific fields for 麻豆女郎 students, faculty and community members free of charge.
